Mortality in live patients with infectious endocarditis

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Infectious endocarditis is characterized by inflammation and infection of the internal surface of the heart with a mortality rate of 30% per year.
Objective: To describe the behavior of mortality in patients survivors alive with infectious endocarditis.
Method: A prospective longitudinal descriptive study was carried out from 2010 to 2015 in the Hermanos Ameijeiras hospital. The sample consisted of 54 live patients with a diagnosis of infectious endocarditis who attended follow-up visits or their relatives were located in case of absence. Summary measures were used for quantitative and qualitative variables. The comparison of proportions was made with Chi-square test; the Fisher test and the student test were applied.
Results: The majority of patients corresponded to the group of 50 to 59 years old (25,9%), 64,8% of the patients were men, 79,6% of patients presented endocarditis of the left cavities. Endocarditis affected the native valve in 42 cases and 10 in valvular prostheses. Of the 12 patients who died, 64% were older than 50 years, 11 corresponded to left cavities, 58.3% died of the medical treatment group and 41.7% of surgical treatment (P = 0.033), with higher mortality in those who they received surgical treatment.
Conclusions: Overall mortality was higher in those who received surgical treatment. The majority of the deceased were over 50 years old. The most affected valves and mortality in relation to the valve were the mitral and the aortic valves.
