ABSTRACT
Long QT and Brugada syndromes are inheritable cardiac disorders caused by a number of mutations in the genes encoding for the transmembrane sodium or potassium ion channel proteins. Mutations in six genes have been found in the long QT syndrome, whereas, Brugada syndrome is characterized by mutations in the sodium channel gene (SCN5A). To date more than 200 mutations have been reported in these genes. Recent studies suggest genotype-phenotype correlations with important implications for diagnosis and treatment of these inherited ventricular arrhythmias.
