ABSTRACT
Objective: to describe the epidemiological characteristics that
distinguish patients classified with accidents or unintentional
injuries treated in the Pediatric Emergency Department of the
Provincial Hospital of Cabinda.
Materials and methods: a descriptive and cross-sectional
investigation was carried out in a population of 320 patients
diagnosed under this heading, treated in the Pediatric Emergency
Department of the Provincial Hospital of Cabinda, Angola, from
January 2007 to September 2009. The type of The lesion was
grouped according to the X International Statistical Classification
of Diseases and Health-Related Problems. The variables age, sex,
type of injury, toxic substance ingested and month of the year were
analyzed, contingency tables were prepared and plotted through
the XLSTAT program.
Results: the main morbidity by type of accidents involved falls
(49.06%), penetration of foreign bodies (14.68%), poisonings
(13.75%), transportation (9.06%) and burns (5 , 62%). The age of
5 to 10 years predominated (53.12%), and the male sex (60.31%).
The poisonings were more frequent between the ages between 5
and 10 years (77.72%) corresponding to the substances ingested
in greater proportions to the oil (63.62%), medicines (6.81%), and
caustic components (6.81 %). The time of increase in accidents
was from june to september.
Conclusions: the types of accidents represented by falls,
penetration by foreign bodies, poisonings, transport and burns
showed remarkable morbidity in the population reaching the highest
sex age and ages from 5 to 10 years, during the dry season, which
determines a cardinal health problem in the pediatric population
in Cabinda.
