ABSTRACT
As transposition of the great arteries (TGA) occurs in an important percentage (16%) of congenital heart malformations, it was decided to determine the co-existent malformations, both cardiac and extracardiac, found at autopsy.
Material and methods: Fifteen autopsies were identified with TGA from 1989-2004 in the Pediatric Hospital of the National Medical Center of Social Security.
Results: These represented 9% of all with congenital heart disease. All the malformations found in these cases were studied, of these cases 60% were masculine, and the majority (53%) was aged 8-30 days. Additional heart malformations occurred in all the cases (100%), the most frequent being patent ductus arteriosus (73%), atrial septal defect (67%) and ventricular septal defect (47%). Extracardiac defects were found in 47%, the most frequent being of the gastrointestinal (57%) and genitourinary (57%) tracts.
Conclusions: We therefore demonstrate that an important proportion of patients with TGA present with other malformations, particularly cardiac but also extracardiac, and that these probably have their origin during the some early embryonic period.
