ABSTRACT
Background: With the demographic transition, chronic noncommunicable diseases
have increased significantly. Diabetes mellitus is one of the most important and has a
negative impact on the quality of life.
Objective: To determine if adequate glycemic control is related to quality of life.
Material and Method: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was
carried out from September 2017 to January 2018 in older adults with diabetes. The
sociodemographic variables, complications of diabetes were measured, and the SF-
36 survey was applied to measure quality of life. Patients with good control and poor
control were compared in relation to their quality of life results.
Results: A total of 94 patients older than 60 years were included. No statistically
significant difference was found in the quality of life between well-controlled and poorly
controlled patients; however, diabetic retinopathy, amputations and depression have
a greater impact on quality of life.
Conclusions: There are other determinants in the quality of life in addition to good
control and we must seek a person-centered care.
