ABSTRACT
Introduction: macular degeneration is recognized as the most important serious and irreversible cause of vision loss in developed countries. Objective: to evaluate the effect of ozone therapy in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (dry), in patients with visual acuity of 0.5 or greater than this.
Method: A therapeutic intervention study was conducted in 30 patients diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (dry), from July 1 to December 30, 2018, treated at the Ophthalmological Center of the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Surgical Clinical Hospital, Holguín, Cuba. The sample was divided into two groups, one study and another control, allowing both treatments to be compared and conclusions reached.
Results: the most affected age group was 70-79 years old, white skin, male sex (66.7%). Visual acuity at six months after treatment with ozone 80% reached the unit of vision, the visual field predominated the mild involvement 60% in those treated with ozone therapy and retinal sensitivity to not present any damage 14% of the ozone therapy group, remained with severe lesions 6% of the group with vitamin therapy.
Conclusions: treatment with ozone therapy seems to be effective in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (dry) in this first stage.
