ABSTRACT

Objective: To report our results with surgical treatment of non-complicated hepatic hydatidosis.
Setting: Second level health care hospitals.
Design: Retrospective, observational study without control group.
Patients and methods: We studied 25 patients, carriers of non-complicated hepatic hydatidic cysts. We analyzed gender, location, used surgical procedure, complications, peri-operative mortality, and follow-up with ultrasonography and computed tomography.
Results: There were a total of 43 cysts in 25 patients, 15 women and 10 men, their ages ranged between 30 and 70 years, mean of 59. Thirty cysts were located in the right hepatic lobe and 13 in the left one; seven surgical techniques were used for their treatment, of these the most frequent was pericystectomy (17 times), followed by lobectomy (14 times). Complications were: bilirachia in three patients, wound infection in two patients and intra-cyst infection in one. One patient died (4%). Follow-up of patients has varied from 6 months to a year, with a mean of 38 months without recurrences.
Conclusion: Non-complicated hepatic hydatidosis, in its cystic form, responds adequately to surgical treatment.
