ABSTRACT
Hilar cholangiocarcinoma, commonly known as Klatskin tumor, is a rare
malignancy. Its etiopathogenesis is poorly understood but there is a strong
association between chronic inflammation, cholestasis and
cholangiocarcinoma. Known risk factors include primary sclerosing
colangitis, fibrocystic liver disease, liver infections, hepatolithiasis, drugs
and toxins. This tumor is characterized by presenting an asymptomatic
clinical picture until advanced stages. Diagnosis is mfindings and diagnostic imaging. Treatment is based on surgery; there is no
demonstrated evidence of a therapeutic benefit from radiation,
chemotherapy, or a combination of both.
