ABSTRACT
The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the cause
of the rapid spread of a disease, affecting thousands of people worldwide. On March
11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a
pandemic. The virus has been identified as the cause of an outbreak of pneumonia of
unknown cause in Wuhan city, China, in December 2019. The clinical presentation
is that of a respiratory infection with a severity of symptoms ranging from mild illness
similar to the common cold up to severe viral pneumonia causing life-threatening acute
respiratory distress syndrome. There is no specific treatment available that has been
clinically proven, other than supportive treatment.
