ABSTRACT
The use of organic solvents such as benzene cause in people with high exposure a series of serious health effects, among which are neurotoxicity and cancer. The objective of this research was to deter-mine the levels of phenol in urine and the clinical manifestations associated with occupational exposure to benzene. A cross-sectional and descriptive field study was carried out in which 32 workers with benzene exposure and 32 without exposure participated. Theis-Benedict method was used for the determination of phenol and modi-fied Jaffé for the determination of creatinine (creat); in urine samples obtained, after 48 hours of occupational exposure. Phenol/creat levels were found in the group with exposure in the range of 88.2 to 92.3 mg/g-creat and 17.8 to 23.2 mg/g-creat in the group without exposure, turned out to be statistically significant. The clinical manifestations such as cough, dermatitis and headache were the most serious. The high concentration of urinary phenol suggests a timely intervention in order to study the factors that are involved in these findings.
