ABSTRACT
Introduction: Scapulohumeral periarthritis constitutes one of the most frequent entities. It is characterized by localized pain that increases with abduction and internal rotation of the humerus. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of pharmaco-puncture and allopathic conventional therapy in scapulohumeral periarthritis.
Method: A quasi-experimental study was carried out at Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Teaching Hospital, in Ciego de Ávila province, from December 2016 to March 2018. The universe was made up of all patients with scapulohumeral periarthritis diagnosis who were referred to the Traditional Medicine consultation and who met the inclusion criteria. The sample was selected using the systematic sampling probabilistic technique and was made up of 60 patients divided randomly into two groups. The experimental group was treated with pharmaco-puncture, while the control group received conventional therapy. The variables studied were intensity of pain, degree of joint mobility and duration of treatment. The assessment was carried out at the beginning and end of the treatment.
Results: The intensity of pain at the beginning did not present significant differences, however at the end it was 66.6% versus 6.6% in the control group. The degree of joint mobility without limitations was 66.6% versus 10% in the control group. Significantly fewer pharmaco-puncture treatment sessions were required compared to those used in the control group which underwent conventional therapy.
Conclusions: The effectiveness of the treatment of scapulohumeral periarthritis with pharmaco-puncture was higher than the conventional allopathic treatment.
