Shock wave therapy in osteomyoarticular system conditions in the elderly

ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of shock wave therapy in osteomyoarticular system conditions in the elderly admitted to Julio Díaz Rehabilitation hospital from January 2015 to January 2019.Methods: An experimental, prospective, longitudinal study was carried out in 800 elderly patients with osteomyoarticular affections who were assisted at the outpatient physiatry consultation. They were divided into groups: I (200 treated with iontophoresis), group 2 (200 who received therapeutic ultrasound) and group III (400 treated with shock waves). All three groups were assessed using the visual analogue pain scale, Katz index, goniometry, radiography and soft tissue ultrasound before, at the end, and three months after treatment. The satisfaction scale was applied. The SPSS v 15.0 program was used for statistical processing, which included frequencies, percentages, Chi square test and Fisher's test.
Results: Pain improvement was attained in group I (52.1%), group II (71.3%) and group III (86.5%). The efficacy of the treatment was 75% in I, 81% in II, and 90% in III. The degree of satisfaction with the treatment was 89.4% in I, 90.4% in II and 95.6% in III.
Conclusions: Shock wave therapy was more effective than conventional treatment in disorders of the osteomyoarticular system in the elderly.
