ABSTRACT
Health professionals must stay up to date and relevant in their field. Robotic assisted surgery is a procedure that has been performed since 2001 and that is being more frequently used due to its advantages over laparoscopic surgery. Over time, its use in the operating room will continue to increase so every anesthesiologist should be familiar with the equipment and the procedure. This article purpose is to provide information to anesthesiologists when they are involved in a Robot assisted surgery with the Da Vinci System
®, with an emphasis in prostatectomy. During these types of surgeries, the anesthesiologist must be prepared for the following challenges: the amount of space occupied by the robot in the operating room, the restriction in terms of access to the patient once the surgical cart is placed, the position of the patient and the pneumoperitoneum, including the physiological consequences that this will have on the patient. This article discusses the different systems for robotic surgery that exist, some of the procedures in which they are used, advantages and disadvantages, the surgical procedure (robot-assisted prostatectomy) and the anesthetic management considering the main challenges while providing some useful recommendations.
