Pharmaceutical evolution in San Antonio de las Vueltas, 1867-2018

ABSTRACT
Introduction: For centuries most countries have considered Pharmacy as the science and practice of preparing, dispensing medications and medicinal products, what institutes it as one of the oldest professions in the history of humanity remaining valid nowadays due to its importance for society. San Antonio de las Vueltas is a Cuban territory in the province of Villa Clara that is part of one of the Popular Councils of Camajuaní municipality and in which Pharmacy has its antecedents from 1867.Objective: To characterize the history and transformation of the pharmacies in San Antonio de las Vueltas from 1867 to 2018.
Methods: Qualitative research. The bibliographic review and the document recording technique were used to obtain data. The historical-logical and synthetic analytical methods, the semi-structured interview, the consultation with experts and specialists, as well as participant observation were used for the evaluation.
Conclusions: The local pharmacy in Vueltas was an institution born from the historical evolution of the town and as such, it has responded to the needs of the people in certain periods. In its performance, it reinforced the sense of continuity and belonging to identity patterns that define the content of this town’s people. Therefore, it becomes a unifying element and a center of convergence for the contents of the town’s social life. This instance of pharmacy, almost lost in history, has left a void that still persists in the cultural processes of the nation.
