ABSTRACT
Introduction: Atypical fibroxanthoma (FXA) is a superficial fibrohistiocytic tumor of intermediate malignancy, predominantly in elderly men in photoexposed areas. The objective of this work is to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of FXA of patients treated in a third level hospital.
Material and methods: Observational, descriptive, retrospective study where patients with histological diagnosis of FXA were included between the years 2004-2017. The sample was divided into two periods: 2004-2010 and 2011-2017 to contrast differences between periods. Clinical characteristics were collected (sex, age of the patient, history of skin cancer, location and size of the lesion).
Results: 52 patients, 41 men and 11 women were included, with a mean age of 78.8. The most frequent location was the scalp. Three patients presented local recurrence. A 47.6% increase was observed in the cases of the second study period.
Conclusion: FXA is a tumor with little tendency to recur. An increase in the number of FXA has been observed in recent years.
