ABSTRACT
Introduction: Early diagnosis of cervical cancer is a practice important to maintain health. Objective: To identify the risk factors for cervical precursor lesions.
Methods: Observational case-control study of cases carried out at Manuel Piti Fajardo Polyclinic during 2015. The study population consisted of 46 women aged 25-59 years old and with altered Pap smear test results (study group), while, by simple random sampling, 46 women were selected at ages similar to those of the study and with negative Pap smear test results (control group). The information was obtained by conduction a survey and from the organic cytology cards. The percentage analysis, the arithmetic mean, and the chi-square test were used to determine associations between variables.
Results: In the study group, the smoking habit prevailed (73.91% with X²= 35.28); 60.87% had sexual intercourse before age 15 (X²= 26.67); the condom was used by 8.70% of the patients; 36.96% had more than four sexual partners, and 34.78% had human papilloma virus (X²= 134.08).
Conclusions: The risk factors for cervical precursor lesions identified were smoking, early start of sexual intercourse, not using a condom, having multiple sexual partners and having a history of sexually transmitted infections.
