ABSTRACT
Introduction: By relating the problem of dry eye and corneal diseases, patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit have a high risk for the development of these events, since they are predisposed to lose their natural mechanisms of ocular protection, due to presenting serious clinical conditions that require mechanical ventilatory support and sedation as methods to ensure life maintenance.
Objective: To integrate, based on the consulted literature, the studies about patients with dry eye and/or corneal diseases in the intensive care unit and to know the onset time for eye abnormalities according to these studies.
Methods: This is an integrative review carried out in the following databases: SCOPUS, PubMed, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and CINAHL. The final sample consisted of 13 articles.
Conclusion: Carrying out this review provided knowledge about the clinical characteristics of patients with dry eye and/or corneal diseases in the intensive care unit, the evidence level and degree of recommendation, the onset time for eye alterations, the risk factors and common/divergent statistics associations among the studies, and the interventions for ocular rehabilitation. Therefore, it was concluded that the onset time for ocular alterations in hospitalized patients can occur at 1 day (24 hours) of hospitalization.
