ABSTRACT
Introduction: The cleft lip and palate is the main birth defect worldwide, because the upper lip and palatine segments do not join during the sixth week of intrauterine life, this being the week of greatest risk. The objective of this study was to identify the palatal lip fissures according to gender, age, place of origin, type of fissure according to associated pathology in patients who are treated at the Center for Dental Specialties (May 2014 to May 2019). Material and methods: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional observational with convenience population sampling (all the files that are available for research will be used) in order to identify the patients. The list of patients was prepared by capturing them in a database from May 2014 to May 2019, and the following variables were recorded: gender, age, place of origin, type of fissure and associated pathology. Results: 673 electronic files were recruited, the files that did not have the data required for this study were deleted (19 files), leaving the total sample of 654. Finding a higher frequency in the left unilateral fissure, predominantly in males, admitted in the first week of birth for treatment, the largest number of patients treated were from the areas surrounding the CEO and regarding the associated pathologies, Pierre Robin syndrome was the most common. Conclusions: The palatine lip fissures represent a health problem, and their treatment is an important economic burden for the Government Health Systems, which requires a multidisciplinary team of high specialty to provide care with quality and warmth.REFERENCES
