Introduction: tumors of the thyroid gland in pediatric ages have an incidence between 1,5 % and 3,4 %.Case report: 15-year-old female patient, who came to pediatric surgery for presenting an increase in volume of the anterior neck region accompanied by loss of weight and appetite. Physical examination revealed a tumor in the anterior neck region of about 2 cm, of elastic consistency, movable and painful on palpation. Thyroid hormone determination studies and ultrasound of the thyroid gland were performed. It was decided a thyroidectomy on suspicion of thyroid carcinoma. Pathological study showed a papillary of the thyroid.
Conclusions: thyroid gland tumors in pediatric ages are infrequent; the most common histological variety is papillary carcinoma. The majority of cases present as a nodule in the anterior neck region. The recommended therapeutic approach is total thyroidectomy and subsequent hormone replacement therapy.
