ABSTRACT
Introduction: Introduction: type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and associated with cardiovascular and renal complications. Objective: to determine sociodemographic and biological factors associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients attending at II Essalud Pucallpa hospital in the period 2018-2019.
Method: an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted, choosing a sample of 124 patients by means of a simple at random sampling. All data were collected from the individual clinical histories and the books of the program through a form of data collection.
Results: the age group of patients from 30 to 39 years old prevailed (25,8 %), and female sex (64,5 %). Body mass index higher than 25 had a statistically significant correlation with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (p<0,05) and between the value of total cholesterol, LDL over the optimal limit (100-129 mg/dl) and HDL under 35mg/dl as well as the presence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The 73,33 % of patients with T2DM reported consuming more than one sugary drink per day, and the 75 % consumed alcohol, finding a statistically significant association (p<0,05). Patients with metabolic syndrome predominated in the T2DM (81,67 %), but not in the group without T2DM (59,37%).
Conclusions: the presence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus was associated with high blood pressure, high body mass index, LDL and HDL cholesterol; as well as the consumption of alcohol and sugary drinks.
