ABSTRACT
Objective: to study the effect of GHRP6 on the ultrastructure of neurons and the peripheral processes of the spiral ganglion in a model of ototoxicity induced by Kanamycin.Material and Method: male Wistar rats, with normal hearing, were divided into three groups. The control group, another group treated with Kanamycin and a third with GHRP6 plus Kanamycin. The obtained cochleas were prefixed by perfusion in the perilymphatic channel, with a mixture of Paraformaldehyde and Glutaraldehyde, then decalcified with EDTA and subsequently processed for study by Transmission Electron Microscopy.
Results: the neurons and peripheral processes of the spiral ganglion of the control group presented normal characteristics. In the Kanamycin group, we found alterations in the cells and peripheral processes. In the group treated with GHRP6, the ultrastructure of the neurons and the peripheral processes of the spiral ganglion showed better conservation.
Conclusions: The preservation of the ultrastructure of the neurons and the peripheral processes of the spiral ganglion treated with the GHRP6 leads us to consider the possible use of it to increase the benefits of cochlear implants in deaf individuals.
