ABSTRACT
Introduction. Chronic degenerative diseases (CDD) comprise a
public health problem that afflicts the general population, however
there are segments of the population where research on health and
nutrition is practically nil. Therefore, the need arises to generate
population diagnoses to establish useful statistics and thus create
strategies to confront these diseases.
Objective. To know the prevalence of CDD in the population of
the Tarahumara settlement “El Oasis” in the state of Chihuahua
and the possible determinants of these diseases.
Materials and method. Observational, descriptive and crosssectional
field study, with a non-probability sample for convenience
of 70 people, with an age range of 18 to 73 years, the variables
studied were: age, weight, height, hip circumference, waist
circumference, body mass index, glucose level, blood pressure,
waist hip index, physical activity, kilocalories, macronutrients
and frequency of consumption through application of survey and
measurement. The data were analyzed using Excel and STATA 14.
Results. The 17,14% of the people in the sample had diabetes and
21,4% had high blood pressure, 70,0% were overweight or obese
and 80,0% had a sedentary lifestyle. Their diet is inadequate.
Conclusions. There is a high prevalence of DM2, systemic arterial
hypertension, overweight and obesity in the adult population of the
tarahumara urban settlement “El oasis” in the state of Chihuahua.
There is a higher proportion of women with high health risk
according to waist-hip index compared to men; however, the
prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension was found to be higher
in men. The eating habits adopted by this population contribute to
this identified problem.
