ABSTRACT
Quality of life is a concept that has to be considered
to make an integral assessment of the health-disease
process in psychiatry.
Aims: To evaluate, analyze and
compare quality of life in patients with schizophrenia
in a rehabilitation environment against those receiving
standardized treatments.
Material and Methods: A
total of 34 patients (17 patients from UNIRE and 17
patients with conventional treatment) with diagnosis
of schizophrenia who attended to CAISAME from
November to December 2013 were given the PANSS
and QLS.
Results: In the group with conventional
treatment, the quality of life was lower (45.29;
+-20.03) than the UNIRE group (59.24, +- 15.89, p =
0.037), and the total PANSS score was higher (64.12,
+-17.17, p=0.303), corresponding to a worsening of
the symptomatology in the patients. The high scores
on the QLS scale are directly related to the low scores
obtained with PANSS (general psychopathology,
negative symptoms, total) (r = -0.581, p = 0.014, r =
-0.517, p = 0.034; R = -0.562, p = 0.019; r = -0.625, p
= 0.007), respectively. Having a religion is related to a
lower quality of life and higher symptomatology (QLS),
(r = -0.623, p = 0.008).
Conclusion: in the UNIRE
group, work and residence have a positive impact on a
better quality of life; in the control group, religion is a
precipitating factor of a worsening in the quality of life,
and of the symptoms.
