ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the incidence, associated malformations, complications and mortality in newborns with gastroschisis and omphalocele.
Methods: We checked the clinic files of newborns that presented defects of the abdominal wall and were hospitalized and treated in this hospital during the years or 2000 to 2004.
Results: Of 30 810 newborns alive, 38 presented congenital defects in the abdominal wall. Twenty seven were gastroschisis and 11 were onphalocele. The predominant gender in both were female: 18 had gastroschisis and 9 onphalocele.
Five patients with gastroschisis had another malformation and one with onphalocele too. In 17 was effected a primary close of the defect. The most frequent complication was sepsis. Fifteen of the newborns with gastoschisis and 8 with omphalocele died.
Conclusions: In this study we found: more cases of gastroschisis in relation to omphalocele. The mother group of 15 to 20 years old, was the most affected. In both groups the females were more. The sepsis was the principal complication. The mortality was bigger in newborns with omphalocele.
