ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify clinic and epidemiologic features of patients with facial palsy attended at CREE Durango since 2002 through 2003.
Material and methods: Descriptive design with a review of patient’s files attended at the CREE for the first time with diagnostic of facial palsy since 2002 through 2003. Statistical analysis was made with descriptive statistics using Epi-Info for Windows and inferential statistics.
Results: There were 203 files analyzed. Mean age was 40 years (SD 19.7; [IC
95% = 39.81,40.19]), 123 (61%; [IC
95% = 54%;67%]) were women. Clinical features are similar to those reported in other papers. More than 50% attended the CREE between the first two weeks of disease and 84% ([IC
95% = 79,89]) had received previous treatment. More common treatments prescribed were vitamins and prednisone (61% and 35% [IC
95% = 54, 68 y 28, 41], respectively). Physiatric treatment more prescribed at the first time was electrotherapy or exercise (66% and 65% [IC
95% = 57, 74 y 58, 71], respectively) although their use is controversial. 72.7% ([IC
95% = 67, 79]) of patients followed until discharged got better before three months after first review. Most frequent sequelae was weakness in 33.6% ([IC
95% = 25, 42]).
Conclusion: There is not difference with the epidemiologic features of this paper and others. Physiatric treatments most used are electrotherapy and exercise. Desertion is high. Treatment with laser seems to be better than treatment with electrotherapy.
