ABSTRACT
Objective. To relate a period of exclusive breastfeeding
less than 6 months with the presence of
parafunctional habits in a group of Venezuelan
children and adolescents who attended in the
Dental Service of the San Juan de Dios Pediatric
Hospital of Caracas in the period July-October
2016.
Materials and methods.Cross-sectional
epidemiological, non-experimental and correlational
study, performed in 183 children and adolescents
between 7 and 12 years. A non-proba
bilistic sample was taken at convenience, with
frequency analysis, percentages, chi-square
test of significance and Pearson’s correlation.
Results. The female gender occupied 56.3%, the
average age was 8.4 ± 1.29 years. 100% of the
population received exclusive breastfeeding for
some time: in 53% it was 0-3 months and in 47%
it was 4-5 months. 131 patients (71.58%) exhibited
one or more parafunctional habits, of which,
83 patients (63.36%) were exclusively breastfed
from 0 to 3 months and 48 patients (36.64%) from
4 to 5 months with a statistical significance of
p= 0.000 (p-value ‹0.05) and r= 25,30%. In this
population, an exclusive breastfeeding period of
less than 6 months was related to the presence of
digital suction (p= 0.015 and r= 18.10%), foreign
body suction (p= 0.001 and r= 24.70%), Atypical
swallowing (p= 0.047 and r= 10.80%) and mouth
breathing (p= 0.000 and r= 33.10%).
Conclusion.
The relationship between a period of less than
6 months of exclusive breastfeeding and the
presence of parafunctional habits in the analyzed
sample is highlighted.
