ABSTRACT
Introduction: Simple renal cysts have a high prevalence in the population and it is estimated that their
incidence increases with age. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is the best alternative when surgery is
indicated.
Objective: To describe the results of MIS in the treatment of patients with simple renal cysts.
Methods: A retrospective study was carried out in 71 patients who had undergone laparoscopic
decortication or percutaneous puncture of symptomatic simple renal cysts, between 2011 and 2017, at
the National Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Results: Average age was 58.8 years. The most
common presentation was lower back pain (95.7 %). The superior pole of the kidney was the most affected
(49.2%). Most patients had a Bosniak I cyst. 94.3 % of the patients were treated with laparoscopic
decortication and 85.9 % by lumboscopic approach. Hospital stay was under 24 hours in 87.3 % of the
cases. Conversion to open surgery was not required. Seven patients (9.8 %) presented some postoperative
complications and Grade I Clavien Dindo prevailed.
Conclusions: Minimally invasive surgery is a safe and
feasible option for the treatment of simple renal cysts. The eligible alternative was decortication by
laparoscopic approach, particularly the lumboscopic way.
