ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this literature review was to evaluate the available evidence regarding the benefit of the use of fluorinated pastes in the prevention of early childhood caries in children under 5 years of age. Methods: A literature review was conducted in several electronic databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, EBSCO, LILACS, COCHRANE from 1997 to 2019.
Results: A total of 50 articles met the inclusion criteria and most of them concluded that the use of fluorides should be utilized in children due to the amount of benefits it provides.
Conclusions: Early childhood caries represents a handicap especially in developing countries as it considerably reduces the quality of life of the child and his family. Using toothpastes high in fluoride can be implemented as a preventive measure to reduce the prevalence of this disease in children under 5 years.
