ABSTRACT
Objective: evaluate the prevalence of edentulism and functional dentition as well as its association with some sociodemographic factors in the oler adult population that attended dental care in the Faculty of Dental Sciences and Public Health of the University of Arts and Sciences of Chiapas (UNICACH).
Material and methods: cross-sectional study was carried out in 441 older adults between 60 and 89 years of age. The data were collected through a questionnaire and oral examination, by two previously calibrated examiners. The data were statistically analyzed using the percentage distribution (prevalence) and Chi2 test (significance level p ≤ 0.05).
Results: the mean age of the population was 68.9 ±7.13 years, the majority were women (69.4%). The prevalence of edentulism was 25.6%, being higher in women (p ‹0.001), among older subjects (p = 0.000) and with higher schooling, the prevalence of edentulism decreased (p ‹0.001). Among the older adults with partial teeth, 34.15% presented functional dentition, which was higher among adults between 60 and 69 years of age (p ‹0.001), in united (p = 0.002) and the highest educational level (p ‹0.001).
Conclusion: dental loss and edentulism are complex phenomena, with various sociodemographic factors involved.
