ABSTRACT
Anxiety is the anticipation of future damage, accompanied by an unpleasant feeling; somatic symptoms of tension and can become pathological. Dental anxiety generates a decrease in patient oral health, leading to an increased prevalence of cavities and gum inflammation, among other problems. Objective: Our aim is to determine the level of anxiety in patients prior to their dental care at primary care. Material and methods: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study on 109 patients over 18 years of age, of which 37 were men and 72 women, using non probabilistic sampling. Data such as gender and age were collected and a questionnaire form containing the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) was used to assess the level of dental anxiety. Descriptive statistics was used with the program SPSS. v. 21. Results: The mean age was 41.69 ± 15.42 years. Among the study group, 47.70% presented mild, 37.61% moderate, 5.50% elevated and 9.17% severe anxiety. In terms of gender, women had the highest levels of anxiety compared to men. All of the patients who seek dental care at the unit, display some level of anxiety, mainly mild. It is necessary to train health personnel and to create follow-up programs for the patient where dental anxiety can be reduced.REFERENCES
