ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the prevalence of TMD in patients from different geriatric centersin Culiacan, Sinaloa (Mexico) according to axis I of the diagnostic criteria for the investigation of temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD) and to analyze the influence of other parameters such as age, gender, or denture use.
Materials and Methods: Two hundred twenty subjects older than 50 years were evaluated according to the criteria of axis I of the RDC/TMD questionnaire. Data on age, gender and type of removable denture were also collected.
Results: Most of patients with TMD were older than 70 years (p = 0.006) and had a higher number of lost teeth (p = 0.003), total denture wearers (p = 0.002), myofascial pain (p ‹0.001), opening pattern different to straight pattern (p = 0.002) and pain at maximum opening (p ‹0.001) together with a lower number of millimeters of maximum opening (p = 0.006). However, sex (p = 1.000), deviation from the midline (p = 0.812) or millimeters of this deviation (p = 0.672) had no significantly influence on the TMD.
