Objective:To assess the prevalence of TMD in patients from several geriatric centersin Culiacan, Sinaloa (Mexico) according to axis II of the diagnostic criteria for the investigation of temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD).
Materials and Methods: Two hundred twenty subjects older than 50 years were evaluated according to the criteria of axis I of the RDC/TMD questionnaire. Data on age, gender and type of removable denture were also considered.
Results: Most of patients with TMD had a regular or deficient perception of their general (p ‹0.001) and oral (p = 0.001) health status. They also had a greater limitation to opening the mouth (p ‹0.001), interferences with the ability to eat (p ‹0.001), joint sounds (p ‹0.001), jaw ache or feel stiff on waking in the morning (p ‹0.001) and bruxism during sleep (p ‹0.001) and during the day (p ‹0.001).
