ABSTRACT
The periapical surgery is defined as the procedure that is made in presence of periapical pathosis when the common endodontic treatment or retreatment has failed. Most of all failed cases in endodontic therapy are caused by microbiological occupation of the root canal space. It has been demonstrated that the main species responsible of failure in root canal therapy is the
Enterococcus faecalis. The purpose of this study was to measure
Enterococcus faecalis microleakage in extracted teeth using different retrofilling materials: amalgam, Super EBA, MTA and Portland cement. For this study sixty three single rooted extracted teeth were used. They were instrumented with the Balanced Force technique, irrigated with NaOCl 5.25%, REDTA, and Clorhexidine Gluconate 0.12%. Four experimental groups of fifteen teeth and three control groups of one tooth each were randomly formed. In each teeth apicoectomy was done and ultrasonically retropreparations were made. Experimental teeth were retrofilled with amalgam, Super EBA, Portland cement and MTA. In all teeth a suspension of
Enterococcus faecalis was inoculated, and the apical portion of these teeth remained in contact with the medium for 15 days. Microleakage was evaluated in the different groups, showing that the MTA and Super EBA groups had the lowest microleakage, followed by the Portland cement and amalgam groups.
