ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the response to treatment for painful diabetic neuropathy in outpatients at a pain clinic, from January 1999 through December 2003.
Materials and methods: A descriptive, retrospective study of the medical files of 158 patients with diabetic neuropathy; 39 of them were excluded for various reasons. The response to treatment was assessed using an visual analogue scale (VAS), comparing the grades at the beginning, middle and end of the treatment. A correlation was also made with the drugs used for treatment.
Results: Significant differences were observed between the response at the middle and the end of treatment compared to the beginning (p ‹ 0.05), as well as with all the drugs used for treatment (p ‹ 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed between drugs.
Discussion: The findings suggest that all the drugs used were effective for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy, achieving varying degrees of pain control.
