ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the prevalence of sarcopenia in our environment, as well as in different age groups. Methods: 293 patients older than 18 years divided into three groups, A1 (18-39 years, 126 subjects), A2 (40-59 years, 96 individuals) and A3 (› 60 years, 71 subjects), were performed the analysis of anthropometric measurements by bioimpedance in an INBODY120. The statistical method was ANOVA.
Results: Sarcopenia was found in 45 individuals (15.35%). The group A1 showed sarcopenia in 18 subjects (14.28%) with an Muscle Mass Index (IMM) 9.1 ± 1.06 kg/m
2 and muscle mass of 24.7 ± 4.9kg, in group A2 11 individuals (11.45%) present sarcopenia with an IMM of 9.1 ± 0.89 kg/m
2 and muscle mass of 22.9 ± 3.5kg, and the group A3 with 16 subjects (22.53%), an IMM of 9.2 ± 0.78 kg/m
2 and muscle mass of 21.98 ± 3.4kg. No statistically significant differences were found in the IMM between the groups (p = 0.98), although it was found in the muscle mass in kilograms (p = 0.011).
Conclusion: Although the A3 population has the highest prevalence of sarcopenia, it´s interesting to find a higher prevalence of sarcopenia in young adults than in mature adults, probably by sedentary life in the new generations. We highlight the importance of evaluating muscle mass in an early age to avoid an increase of incidence of sarcopenia in older adults.
