ABSTRACT
Objective: The information of the effect of body contouring surgery after bariatric surgery in weight loss is limited. We compare weight loss after bariatric surgery in patients in whom body contouring surgery was performed with patients without body contouring surgery. Material and methods: Comparative cohort study. Women in whom gastrojejunal bypass (DGY) was performed between January 1997 and October 2009, and were classified in groups according the performance of abdominoplasty following bariatric surgery. Student T test was performed for means comparison. We estimate the percentage of women in each group that reached a body mass index (BMI) ≤ 30 kg/m2 with Kaplan-Meier analysis. Results: In 200 women GB was performed, in 50 of them abdominoplasty was done after bariatric surgery. The mean follow-up of de cohort was 4.9 ± 2.9 years., the decrease in the BMI of the women in the group with abdominoplasty was significantly higher (18.64 ± 6.50 kg vs 15.47 ± 5.7 kg, p ‹ 0.001). Percentage of the excess of body weight lost was higher in the group with abdominoplasty (61.04 ± 14.39% vs 54.53 ± 16.96%, p = 0.015). A higher percentage of the group with abdominoplasty reached a BMI ≤ 30 kg/m2 (34.0% vs 28.6%, p = 0.009) during follow-up. Conclusions: In the group of women with GB followed by abdominoplasty a greater reduction in BMI and body excess weight was observed. This suggests that body contouring surgery have a positive effect and an association with a greater weight loss in the follow up of patients with bariatric surgery.REFERENCES
