ABSTRACT
Introduction: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is the endoscopic digestive procedure of highest complexity, the complication rate is 4 to 16% with a mortality of 0.1-0.9%. Complications of ERCP have been documented as acute pancreatitis, bleeding, perforation, and cholangitis.
Objective: To know the frequency of ERCP- related complications in our institution.
Material and methods: A retrospective, observational, descriptive, cross- sectional study was conducted in the Department of Endoscopy at the Military Central Hospital. Procedures were performed on patients who underwent ERCP over a 5-year period (January 2012 to December 2016), and demographic and procedure-related data were collected on patients and complications presented within 24 hours of the procedure.
Results: 600 patient procedures were admitted, complications from ERCP occurred at a frequency of 13% (80). Pancreatitis being the most frequent with 6.8% (41), followed by cholangitis in 3.1% (19), hemorrhage 1.8% (11), and perforation in 1.3% (8). With a mortality of 0.16% (1) after surgical intervention for perforation.
Conclusion: The rate of related complications was 13% with pancreatitis being the most frequent complication. However, asymptomatic elevation of pancreatic enzymes occurs in 60% of cases and must be another known entity.
