ABSTRACT
Background: There is much evidence that the withdrawal of mechanical
ventilation tends to be delayed, exposing the patient to unnecessary discomfort,
increased risk of complications and increased costs. The time in the mechanical
ventilation removal process represents 40%-50% of the total duration of mechanical
ventilation. In 2017, our hospital spent 34,581 pesos/day per patient in the
adult intensive care unit.
Clinical cases: A male and female patients, 47 and 48 years old, respectively,
who required mechanical ventilation. In the case 2 early passive mobilization
was done.
Conclusion: An important clinical improvement was observed in the case where
this mobilization was carried out. It can not be held responsible only for the early passive
mobilization of the patient’s improvement, but it opens an area of opportunity at
low cost to reduce days of mechanical ventilation and thereby reduce days of stay in
the intensive care unit and therefore costs.
