ABSTRACT
Background: Many countries have opted for DNA testing of human papilloma virus and cytology as a triage test for diagnostic evaluation. Colposcopy is used to guide the taking of biopsies. Objective: To demonstrate the reasons why immediate electro-surgical excision should be chosen in cases with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion in programs with detection of high-risk human papillomavirus and cytology as a triage test.
Methodology: Search in MEDLINE, Embase with uterine cervical neoplasms and mass Screening and papillomaviridae (randomized controlled trial), colposcopy (randomized controlled trial), uterine cervical neoplasms mass screening and papillomaviridae or papillomaviridae (meta-Analysis), squamous intraepithelial lesions of the cervix and therapeutics , (meta-analysis and systematic reviews), squamous intraepithelial lesions of the cervix and see and treat, screen-and-treat and cervix and EBM Reviews – Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews with colposcopy, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, uterine cervical neoplasms and mass screening and papillomaviridae. Searches were from December 2018 to March 2019. Finally, it was changed to a narrative review and manual search.
Results: Out of 1699 articles located, 73 were selected for reading the entire article, none of which was found related to the objective. However, these articles served as the basis for analysing the performance of screening tests and the current knowledge about immediate electro-surgical excision.
Conclusions: It is recommended immediate electro-surgical excision in cases with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion in programs with detection of high-risk human papillomavirus and cytology as a triage test.
