ABSTRACT
Although
Staphylococcus aureus is the main causative agent of osteomyelitis in all age groups, in newborns it is related to some well-established risk factors such as prematurity, hospitalization in Neonatal Intensive Care, use of intravascular lines or other invasive devices. We present the case of a healthy newborn with no risk factors with humeral osteomyelitis and concomitant septic arthritis due to
S. aureus, with a delay of two weeks to the hospital level, given the difficulty of diagnosis in the neonatal age. It was successfully treated with a long antibiotic course (four weeks) directed for susceptible methicillin
S. aureus (SAMS) and open surgical drainage, normalizing acute phase reactants and recovering the active mobility of the limb, without the presence of risk factors and specific symptoms. The diagnosis of neonatal osteomyelitis is complicated, which increases the risk of sequel and long-term prognosis.
