ABSTRACT
Introduction: Percutaneous nephrostomy is the minimally invasive surgical technique that allows the transient or permanent placement of a catheter of adequate caliber inside the renal collecting system, for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes and is basically indicated for the treatment of obstructive conflicts of the upper urinary tract. Objective: To describe the results obtained with the use of percutaneous nephrostomy in the treatment of patients with obstructive renal failure in the Provincial General Teaching Hospital of ¨Antonio Luaces Iraola¨. Method: Were studied all patients with a diagnosis of obstructive renal failure in the three-year period who underwent percutaneous nephrostomy as part of the treatment. Results: A total of 48 patients were treated and 53 percutaneous nephrostomies were performed in the study period. Patientsolderthan 60 years, male, of the white race and from ¨Antonio Luaces Iraola¨ were the groups with the highest incidence. Neoplasics and lithiasic disease are the main etiological diagnoses of obstruction. Results: 140 transplants were performed, 103 of them (73.6 %) of cadaveric donation; 90 (94.3 %) of the male sex; 85 (60.7 %) whites and most adults under 60 years of age. There were no failure in the initial function 78 patients (55.7 %); ATN was presented in 34 cases (24.3 %) and associated with RA in 4 (2.9 %); the AR was presented in 4 cases (2.9 %). Conclusions: Percutaneous nephrostomy is a fast, safe procedure with a low rate of complications to treat obstructions of the upper urinary tract, as long as it is performed by personnel trained in endourological techniques.REFERENCES
