ABSTRACT
Feedback syndrome is a potentially lethal condition that occurs in patients who restart nutrient delivery after prolonged periods of fasting or in malnourished patients. In the critically ill patient, early initiation of nutritional support (‹ 48 hours on admission to the Intensive Care Unit) has been recommended in order to improve clinical outcomes, although the dose of calories and other macronutrients continues to be debated. This condition is little recognized in daily practice, therefore prevention and management are topics little known to clinical staff. This article provides a review of the causes, consequences, prevention and management of feedback syndrome in critically ill adult patients.
