ABSTRACT
The Accreditation under ISO 15189 model in Latin America through National Accreditation Agencies, has not shown a high adherence. A descriptive study was designed in the framework of the «Regional Workshop Interpretation of Critical Requirements ISO 15189.2012», to know the perception about the accreditation under this standard. A self-administered, voluntary instrument was applied. 260 laboratories participated (accredited and non-accredited). Demographic information was collected, accompanied by a block of 19 questions for accredited and non-accredited laboratories, some using Net Promote Scoring (NPS), to establish the degree of recommendation or adaptation to a particular area or concept related to accreditation and its processes of implementation. The majority of participants were non-public laboratories with attention to ambulatory and hospitalized population. Among the non-accredited, close to 50% were small and 22% reported being certified or accredited under schemes different from ISO 15189. Most of the non-accredited, declared to have an insufficient knowledge of the accreditation mechanism ISO 15189 (NPS -73), but recognize their importance (NPS 30). The estimation of non-accredited laboratories in compliance with management and technical requirements is insufficient. The dissemination of the benefits of accreditation, the familiarization of professionals with their requirements and their introduction into professional training programs, including the legal basis of their execution, can be considered as key aspects if a greater penetration of ISO 15189 is sought in the region.
