ABSTRACT
Conjunctival melanomas arise from the same embriologically derived melanocytes as their cutaneous counterparts. However, ocular and cutaneous melanomas differ in its clinical presentation, epidemiology, treatment and prognosis. Conjunctival melanoma has an extremelly low incidence. In the last years an increasing number of cases has been reported. Most of conjunctival melanomas develop in the limbus or the bulbar conjunctiva, from conjunctival nevi, primary acquired melanosis or
“de novo”.
Any pigmented lesion arising in palpebral conjunctiva should be considered as probable melanoma, because seldom a benign lesion arises at this site. Although the treatment relies principally on the ophthalmologist.
