ABSTRACT
Introduction: Occupational accidents with exposure to biological products pose a risk of infection. Objective: To characterize the accidents related to the biological risk reported in the clinical laborato-ries of primary health care of the teaching polyclinics A, B and C in the period between January 2013 and January 2018. Material and method: A retrospective descriptive study of the accidents notified by the workers of the clinical laboratories of the teaching polyclinics A, B and C was carried out. The sample was constituted by 37 workers to whom a survey was applied to collect the information related to the accidents of biological risk that occurred in the period studied. The variables considered were: age, sex, years of work, professional level, work accidents suffered, procedure performed at the time of the acci-dent, element involved, injury suffered, protection element used, element causing the injury, exposure, cause of the accident, report of it and illnesses that it has suffered in the last five years. Results: During the period studied, 16 accidents were reported, of which 25% were caused by short-stabbing material. In the occurrence of accidents, 25% of them were due to own carelessness as a cause of greater incidence. The extraction of blood is the highest accident rate activity represent-ing 37.5%. Conclusions: During the course of the investigation, the insufficient preparation of the laboratory personnel to perform a more effective compensatory corrective work was evidenced.REFERENCES
