ABSTRACT
Introduction: Platelets play a very important role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. Von Willebrand factor is an adhesion glicoprotein produced by platelets and endothelial cells. Platelet aggregation may be induced either by chemical factors or mechanical stimulus both involved in the development of thrombotic microangiopathy.
Objective: To describe and compare of levels of VwF between normal pregnancies a pregnancies complicated with severe preeclampsia.
Design: Case control study.
Material and methods: VwF was determined by ELFA using a VIDAS Kit (Biomereux Francais) in women with severe preeclampsia and normal pregnancies. The results were analized using Student t.
Results: We found singnificant differences between both groups in the values of VwF and other clinical variables.
Conclusions: The differences between the levels of VwF could be a biochemical link between platelets and the development of thrombotic microangiopathy.
