ABSTRACT
Introduction: Community-acquired pneumonia is the most frequent cause of infectious morbidity and mortality worldwide. Objective: To determine the relationship between some risk factors and the discharge status of patients admitted for community-acquired pneumonia.
Methods: A descriptive, prospective study was conducted with patients suffering from community-acquired pneumonia. They were treated in the Intensive Therapy at Joaquín Albarrán Domínguez Surgical Clinical Teaching Hospital, from January 2016 to December 2017. One hundred thirty-eight cases were selected. Cultures were carried out in all cases. We analyzed the variables age, ≥3 days of hospital stay, comorbidities, state of shock, use of artificial mechanical ventilation, mortality according to prognostic scale, isolated germ and status at discharge. A database was constructed in SPSS and the nonparametric test Χ2 was used to analyze the relationship between the variables.
Results: Most of the patients who died were older than 65 years and their stay exceeded three days. The most frequent comorbidity was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 2.8 % of the cases entered into shock and all required mechanical ventilation. They had high mortality risk according to the prognostic scale. The causal germ could only be isolated in 27.5 %. The most frequent was Klebsiella spp (28.9 %).
Conclusions: Age, an over three-day hospital stay, the use of mechanical ventilation and the risk of mortality, according to the prognostic scale, were significantly related to the status at discharge.
