ABSTRACT
Introduction: Aedes albopictus is a mosquito that represents a threat to public health constituting a potential vector of dengue, zika and chikungunya. Chemical control is still the most effective method to avoid the transmission of this arbovirus. In Cuba, any study has been made on resistance to insecticides in this species, and it is necessary to have a referred sensitive strain.
Objective: To select a strain sensitive to insecticides of Ae.albopictus as a reference to resistance studies in this species.
Methods: Three strains of Ae.albopictus collected in Havana City were used: 1) Fraga of La Lisa municipality, 2) Zoo of Plaza de la Revolución municipality, and 3) Boyeros of Boyeros municipality. It was evaluated the level of sensitiveness to insecticides through bio-essays of the World Health Organization and the method of impregnated bottles recommended by the Center for the Control and Prevention of Diseases.
Results: Of the three evaluated strains, Fraga sample showed the lowest levels of lethal concentrations for the organophosphate temephos´ insecticide in larvae. It was demonstrated the development of resistance in Zoo strain, and Boyeros strain resulted sensitive. In the adult stage, Fraga strain resulted sensitive to the pyrethroids: cipermetrine, lambdacialotrine and deltametrine, also to the organophosphate called chlorpyrifos; and to the carbamates called propoxur and bendiocarb. While verifying the resistance to lambdacialotrine and deltametrine, Zoo strain´s sample resulted positive, and Boyeros sample was positive to deltametrine.
Conclusions: Fraga strain showed sensitiveness to all the evaluated insecticides, and it was used as a reference in this study. It will be kept in the laboratory with the aim to deepen in the studies on resistance to insecticides in this species that is currently named FragaAlbS-CU.
