ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cerebrovascular disease constitutes a global health problem caused by an alteration at the circulatory level in the brain. Functional electrical stimulation is a rehabilitation technology that uses electrical current applied to muscles with undamaged peripheral nerves and generates artificially neuronal stimulation. Methods: Searches in libraries and on the Internet of domestic and foreign medical journals indexed in SciELO, Imbiomed and Pubmed in a 10-year horizon in Spanish and English. We also searched thesis reviews of studies and textbooks with information related to Functional electro stimulation as treatment for hemiplegic shoulder subluxation after cerebrovascular disease.
Results: Almost 75% of survivors have some type of disability, such as speech or swallowing disorders, facial, psychological problems, nervous disorders and motor deficits. Survivors have paresis of the upper limb (55 and 75%). Clinical studies have shown that electrical stimulation applied after such a disease greatly improves motor function and performance in daily life activities and reduces long-term spasticity.
Conclusions: Rehabilitation care in hemiplegic patients should be as early as possible in relation to the cerebrovascular event. Functional electrostimulation in the shoulder of hemiplegic patients must be an essential part in the neurorrestaurative treatment.
