ABSTRACT
Introduction: The importance of adequate nutrition before and during pregnancy is an essential requirement to ensure optimal health and wellbeing of both the mother and the product of conception. An insufficient supply of vitamins can lead to a state of biological competence between the mother and the fetus, which can be detrimental to the state of health of both. Objective: To evaluate the adequacy of daily consumption and serum levels of antioxidant vitamins of pregnant women attended in the health areas of the city of Bayamo, in relation to nutritional status to early intake.
Methods: An analytical and longitudinal observational study was carried out in which 65 pregnant women with gestational age between 25 and 36 weeks were included. For the determination of the nutritional status to the uptake the Body Mass Index was used, the dietary evaluation was made through a semiquantitative survey of frequency of food consumption and in the blood serum the concentration of the vitamins C, of the α was determined tocopherol and retinol.
Results: Inadequate intake and status of α-tocopherol predominated in all groups of pregnant women according to the nutritional status of the uptake, while the consumption and status of vitamins A and C was adequate in all groups. Conclusions: The status of vitamin E is at risk for both pregnant women and their fetuses, but not vitamins C and A.
